LYNDA HIRSCH ON TELEVSION — GOSSIP, by Lynda Hirsch – Creators Syndicate

“Days of Our Lives” is back on the air after a two-week hiatus for the Olympics. The international sporting event had more drama than all the soap operas.

Triumph: The athlete, Colby Stevenson, who survived an almost-deadly car crash, which resulted in a skull broken in several places, multiple injuries to the rest of his body and coma for three days. This year, he went to the Olympics.

Misdirection: After a two-week suspension due to COVID, he went back to the games. Sadly, he went the wrong way.

Anger: A U.S.-born-and-raised ice skater played for China, where her mother was born. Bill Maher was not amused. He called her out on his politically incorrect TV show.

Almost love: Olympic winners Tara Lipinski and Johnny Weir did the commentary for ice skating, kidding when they cite that the skater’s position was off by a millimeter. That a skater can step on the ice, twirl and jump should be enough. Terry Gannon, the third host of the skating competition, acted like the adult in the room keeping them in control.

Fashion: Whatever Weir wore. Each of his costumes were flamboyant, just like he is.

Grace: The gold-winning men’s ice skater. After he won and was the toast of the Olympics, he did not leave the venue. He stayed to cheer on the other skaters.

Fun: All the cute stuffed animals that were thrown on the ice.

Sadness: All the athletes who were supposed to place fell or were ran ragged. The elite athletes spend years of their life training. Up at 5 a.m. Practicing, falling and dreaming of winning the gold. For most, the dreams do not come true. Even when they win, they have that “The Graduate” stare; what comes next?

Heartbreak: The 15-year-old Russian ice skater who had a banned substance in her system. The Committee said she could participate. A favorite, she came in fourth. Crushed, she skated to the kiss and cry area. Here, her coach did not offer support. She chastised her for giving up on a jump. The preteen was crying. She claimed she was not crying; she was heaving. Either way, it was awful to see.

Oftentimes, folks ask how to get their child on a soap. Don’t do it. A child has to deal with adult actors who pretty much look in their eyes to see their reflection. For the most part, they are not playing catch with the kid; they are holed up in their dressing room. One time, an actor whose child played her kid had to eat oranges. It took 15 takes and an equal amount of oranges. The toddler got sick. Mom ended his soap career. Being a kid is their job. It is not to support their family.

As for “Days,” it has returned with not-to-miss shows. Kristen, holding Abby hostage, tells what she did to Sarah. She erased her memories and turned her into Renee DuMonde. That character was essential to the show for years in the mid-1980s. Brenda Benet originally played her sister, Lee DuMonde. Sadly, Benet committed suicide after her six-year-old son by Bill Bixby died due to an infection. Renee was written off and never mentioned until this week. Lani’s biological dad paid her a surprise visit. Gwen feared losing Xander if he were to know she was responsible for Sarah’s disappearance. Good stuff.

After four years, he is really, sincerely dead. “General Hospital” fans have been salivating for Peter’s (Wes Ramsey) demise. Aside from being a supervillain, he was also annoying. Ramsey posted his love for the show and the fans: “They hated me. They were supposed to.” Ramsey caused a stir when he cited how good he was because he had classical training. OK. Please do not let him return as Peter’s good twin, Paul. No word that will happen, but good and evil twins are a soap opera staple.
