GOSSIP GIRL: The perseverance of Vice President Inday Sara Duterte – Manila Bulletin

Oxford Languages defines perseverance as the persistence of doing something despite the difficulty. Last Sunday, I was again a witness to the perseverance of our newly inaugurated Vice President Inday Sara Duterte. I was invited to host her inauguration thanksgiving concert of former Mayor of Davao now Vice President of the Philippines.

It was a star-studded event with performers Andrew E, Bayani Agbayani, Sanya Lopez, Arci Muñoz, Robert Seña, Isay Alvarez, Joshua and Jopay Zamora, Rodjun and Diane Cruz, Ynez Veneracion, Ima Castro and Janelle Jamer. The people of Davao sang and danced their hearts out till the wee hours in the morning. This was Mayor Inday Sara’s way of thanking her people for all the support they gave her, and she stayed until the celebration ended.

For you to understand the perseverance and sacrifice our new Vice President has, let me walk you through the timeline of the event, starting with the mass at 3pm.

As early as 1 pm,  Vice President Inday Sara has been receiving former presidents like President Gloria-Macapagal Arroyo and President-elect Bongbong Marcos, and other VIPs. So let’s say, her last meal was around lunch. Beginning with the Holy Mass at 3 pm, all the media cameras were pointing at her until the end of the inaugural ceremony at 5:30 p.m. During the whole time, she did not take not a single bite to recharge herself. After which everyone wanted a picture – taking with the new vice president of the Philippines, so the line, not exaggerating, was two streets long. We started our thanksgiving concert and at around 5:30 p.m.

At around 9:30 p.m., I could still see the “palangga” of the Davaoeños still smiling, granting each and every person a picture. Since I was hosting the event, I was able to graciously ask the people if I could cut the line and ask for a 15-second picture with “VP Guapa” as I fondly call her. This was about 9:30 p.m., she was standing in her elegant green gown and high heels and there was no chair in sight. This meant that she was standing, granting everyone pictures from 5:30 p.m. till 9:30 p.m. That’s four hours! The picture-taking ended in another hour or so. That was when I realized that this lady was gifted by God with unbelievable perseverance. Women will understand how difficult it is to stand in high heels for an hour. But to stand in high heels for five hours and not have a single meal in 10 hours just to accommodate the people who love you and supported you is amazing. She persevered as mayor of Davao and her hard work left Davao’s finances in perfect order as she eradicated Davao’s P2 billion debt to the Central Bank of the Philippines.

In 2019, she persevered as the chairperson of the Hukbo ng Pagbabago political party and campaigned for her senators for 45 days straight, jumping from one province to the other and her perseverance gave the party a huge win of 9 out of the 13 senators she campaigned for.

This 2022, she persevered again campaigning 90 days non-stop for the vice-presidential seat, riding her motorcycle from Aparri to Jolo. Even I could not keep up with her energy, her perseverance gathered her a 61.29 percent of the Philippines’ voting population, garnering 31,561,948 voters in her favor.

When a person has perseverance, long-term goals are achieved. Most people often lose focus and direction when the going gets tough. But people who know how to sacrifice and persevere reach their long-term goals because they do not lose motivation and enthusiasm. Perseverance boils down to the drive and resilience that a person displays while completing an objective. Hence, expect that the goals of the office of the vice president of the Philippines will be achieved before her term ends.
